The Mighty Arctic Ocean
The mighty Arctic Ocean hides many secrets. A fishing trip from a boat or from land is guaranteed to give you a catch. Maybe you will see a king crab crawl along the ocean bed, or whales playing on the ocean waves. Or how about a spot of bird watching?
The warm air from the Gulf Stream ensures that the sea is free of ice all year round. Nevertheless, this whimsical ocean changes its character from season to season. When the midnight sun shines, the sea is often calm and almost inviting, but a short time later when autumn approaches, the wild waves rear their heads and show their power. The angry sea can be watched from the safety of the water's edge. Or maybe you would rather be out there, experiencing the force of the ocean whilst rafting, kiting or sailing.
The plentiful fishing stocks in the Arctic Ocean are one of the reasons why people have lived in Varanger for centuries. People have always made their living from the sea here, even in the darkest depths of winter when the seas are raging and the waves are crashing to land.
