Myths

People have lived continually in the Varanger area for more than 10,000 years. Sacrificial stones, sacrifices, sacred hills, rock carvings and other traces left in the landscape give us clues and information about sacrificies carried out in the distant past.

You can see Varanger's mythical landscape in several areas in the region. Along the cultural path in Mortensnes you can wander back through time gone by. Who lived here 10,000 years ago, where did they come from, what did they do? Climb the hill called Aldon and you will find yourself in a sacred place which was used as a sacrificial site by the Sami way back in history. The landscape in Varanger is full of myths and legends.

The unique landscape and light have created an stage for fantasy and oral tradition for thousands of years. Sami oral tradition and religion have given birth to thousands of legends and myths closely connected to nature and the rock carvings found all along the Varanger fiord.
